What is a Health Coach

Health coach, life coach, do you really need one? There is so much buzz lately around the world of coaches and whether or not it is worth hiring one. It seems like everyone calls themselves a coach.

Whether or not you hire one, of course, is up to you. It depends on the level of accountability you need or how important it is to follow through with whatever you are desiring to do. That is what a coach does, they are kind of like a consultant or accountability partner. They learn about your goals and help you follow through like never before.

What Is A Health Coach

Ok, so what is exactly is a health coach? Good question! Well first of all what they are not and what they should not pretend to be, is a Doctor, nutritionist, etc.

What they are is masters of habit change. You see doctors and nutritionist can help you access what you need but they don’t always have the time to see that you follow through. That is where a health coach comes into play. They help you achieve your desired goal, whether or not it is prescribed by a doctor.

A health coach WILL help simplify basic nutrition knowledge that you can use and they will help you with basic lifestyle changes. The lifestyle changes are the key to success, not being put on a new diet. You will, maybe for the first time in your life, have a healthy relationship with your body, food, and lifestyle. There are four top lifestyle changes that you coach will help your work through:

  1. Cravings
  2. Chronic Dieting
  3. Over eating, Emotional eating, Compulsive and Binge eating
  4. Body image issues

Yes, nutrition is essential to being healthy but our habitual thought pattern and beliefs are what is that the core and lead us to permanent lifestyle changes. See the point? IT IS NOT ABOUT FOOD.

A health coach is there to ensure that you follow through like you never have before in your entire life.

Is It Expensive to Hire A Coach?

Yes and no.

Yes, if you are not willing to spend money on yourself and truly looking to make a change than it would not be worth the investment in yourself.

No, if you know that making your health a priority is crucial and you need the support then you will actually find it to be the best money you ever spent.

Many people who hire a health coach actually tend to save money overall. When we are leading a healthy lifestyle many other expenses in our lives go down. Eating out, expensive coffees, supplements, medical bills, etc. We ALL can afford what is important to us, we just have to decide that our health is a priority and not make excuses around that.

We can deny it but the truth is we always come up with money if it’s important enough to us. I always think of the thousands, and yes I said thousands, that I have spent over the years on supplements, diet books, diet programs, etc. What a waste! I always put the weight back on and it usually led to several months of binging once I got off of the diet. As many of you know, binging itself is not cheap!

What to Look For When Hiring A Health Coach

There are several things you should look for when it comes to hiring a coach:

  1. They should be a certified Health or Life coach or have some sort of specialized training
  2. They should be willing to work with your current plan or help you learn healthy habits without requiring you to buy a supplement from them
  3. They should be someone that is going to keep you accountable, not just be your friend
  4. A good health coach will take the time to listen to you and truly care about your situation and not just throw out a ton of advice
